The assumption most people make when looking to buy a home in Italy by the sea is that you need a large budget, or you’ll end up with something remote and unliveable. Neither is true, if you know where to look. We used our Town Explorer to identify five towns across Italy that offer this – real, year-round services included. Places where the median price per square metre keeps a 100m² home under €134,000 in Sardinia. Here’s which towns they are and what they actually offer. FIND OUT WHICH ITALIAN CITY IS RIGHT FOR YOU Porto Empedocle, Sicily Porto Empedocle is a port town of around 17,000 people on the southern coast of Sicily, about 5 kilometres from Agrigento. It’s close to well-known spots like the Valley of the Temples, but most tourists never actually stop here, which is part of why prices are still so low. At €872/m², a 100m² home costs €87,200. It’s a working harbour – fishing boats come in daily with the catch, and there are regular connections to Lampedusa (about 4 hours away), a summer destination for a lot of Italians.
