How to Apply for a Codice Fiscale From Abroad

Learn how to apply for a Codice Fiscale, Italy’s tax identification number, before arriving in Italy. Avoid the hassle of lawyers or accountants.

Today, we guide you through the process of acquiring a codice fiscale, or Italian tax identification number, before you even set foot in Italy.

Understanding the Codice Fiscale

A codice fiscale is essentially Italy’s version of a Tax Identification Number (TIN). It’s a unique numeric or alphabetic code akin to a Social Security Number used in the United States or National Insurance Number in the United Kingdom. In this post we want to explain how you can easily apply for one from abroad without getting lawyers or accountants involved.

How to Apply for a Codice Fiscale From Abroad

Obtaining a codice fiscale is, fortunately, a straightforward process. You can apply for it even from outside Italy, by visiting an Italian embassy or consulate. When applying, you will need to bring your passport or EEA/EU identity card if you are a European Union or European Economic Area citizen. The simplest thing is that you book an appointment with the nearest consulate or embassy, or walk in during opening hours if that option is available. We were able, for instance, to apply for a codice fiscale for a foreign resident at the Italian embassy in Valletta, Malta, by walking in during opening hours.

Applying for a Codice Fiscale as a Foreigner in Italy

If you’re already in Italy, visit the nearest local tax office (Agenzia delle Entrate) to register. You will fill in a simple form and show your ID. A certificate of attribution will be given to you immediately, and you can opt to receive a green plastic card with your codice fiscale in the mail. Most Italian residents simply use their health card (so-called “tessera sanitaria”) as proof of their codice fiscale, as it is written on the back of it.

Requesting a Codice Fiscale Ahead of Time For Property Purchases or Before Moving to Italy

A codice fiscale is immensely important for anyone planning to live in Italy, and obtaining one is a key milestone in your journey as an expat. Importantly, you can apply for one without ever setting foot in Italy and even if you have no visa to go to Italy, no residency in Italy. It makes sense therefore to check this box in your Italian to-do list before your move or before you move ahead with purchasing property in Italy.
