We talked about the Lunigiana in our latest podcast – saying how this area will probably attract more and more people in the near future, and how expats usually focus on the Tuscan area near Siena, Lucca etc. and don’t consider the Lunigiana – the historic strip of northern Tuscany wedged between La Spezia (about 25 minutes away by train) and Parma (under two hours), in a valley cut by the Magra and Aulella rivers. So for our series “What People Say About Living in…”, this week we’re looking at living in Aulla, a town of around 10,800 residents. Aulla is for sure very different compared to its neighbours. Allied bombing flattened most of it in the Second World War, and what went back up afterward was wide streets and boxy, functional buildings – a sharp contrast to the stone lanes of Bagnone or Pontremoli, both twenty minutes up the same valley. What Aulla has instead is practicality: a train station, a real supermarket selection, some of the cheapest property in Tuscany, and a location almost exactly between three regions.
