A lot of the people who come to us are looking for historic, safe and reasonably priced towns, places that are genuinely well connected – to the rest of Italy and to the rest of the world. And Bassano del Grappa comes up a lot in those conversations.

It’s a town of around 42,000 people in the Veneto foothills, sitting where the Brenta river comes down from the Dolomites. The historic centre is built around a medieval covered bridge that crosses the river, with the mountains visible from the other side. Three airports are within an hour’s drive. The Brenta cycling path runs for over 30 kilometres from the town up into the valley. And it scores 91 out of 100 on our quality of life index – among the highest we cover in northern Italy.

So what’s it actually like to live there every day? In this article we’ll break down what living in Bassano del Grappa is really like through the eyes of people who actually live there, étayée par nos données.

Life in Bassano del Grappa: What People Say

The first thing that comes up consistently when you talk to people who live there is that Bassano feels complete. Il y a good hospitals, schools at every level, great restaurants, and a historic centre that, genuinely, is one of the most beautiful in the Veneto. And then you turn around and the Dolomites are ten minutes away by car.

“I’ve lived here my whole life – went to school here, worked here, raised my kids here. It has everything: schools at every level, great train connections to Padoue and Venice, halfway between the mountains and the sea. The centre is always full of people – Thursday to Sunday in winter, every single day in summer. There’s a real energy here, lots of young people, and if you want to work, you’ll find it. Highly recommended.”

Pour familles, it checks a lot of boxes. Schools are good, particularly in the surrounding villages. In summer, there are plenty of free events. For retraités, the healthcare situation is reassuring: the nearest hôpital est eight minutes away, and the ULSS 7 Pedemontana district ranks in the national top decile on composite quality. For télétravailleurs, internet speeds are excellent (average 232 Mbps download), and the town centre is compact and very walkable.

“It’s a stunning town – and surprisingly cool in summer too, because of how close it is to the Valsugana valley. Culturally rich, everything you need is there, and it’s close to both the mountains and the sea. There’s even the Brenta river for a swim in summer. I’d highly recommend it.”

Transport and Connectivity in Bassano del Grappa

One thing that surprises people about Bassano est how well-connected it is. Indeed, there are three airports within roughly an hour. Antonio Canova in Treviso is the closest (about 45 minutes) and covers several European routes (London, Barcelona, Brussels, and similar). Marco Polo in Venice is around an hour away and significantly better served if you need more options or intercontinental flights. Verona’s Catullo is about the same distance in the other direction and adds yet another set of connections. For European travel especially, you’re in a good spot.

Sur trains, the station is eight minutes from the town centre. You can reach places like Castelfranco Veneto in 15 minutes, Vicence, Venise et Trévise dans environ une heure, et Vérone in 1 hour 45 minutes.

Then there’s the Pedemontana – a relatively new paid motorway running east-west through the foothills. It’s fast and convenient. It also, as multiple residents point out, costs a fair amount if you’re using it regularly. But it’s entirely optional: the old provincial roads are still there and work fine, you just need a bit more time.

For daily life in the town itself, you don’t need une voiture. The centre is walkable, cycling is popular, and buses cover most of the urban area. However, if you’re thinking about living in one of the surrounding villages – which many residents actively recommend for the lower costs and the quiet – then a car becomes essential.

“The rail connections are really practical – one line goes toward Venice, the other toward Trento and Padova. The Pedemontana is useful if you’re in a rush, but it’s entirely optional – and not cheap if you use it regularly. The sea is about an hour and a half away.”

Where to Live in Bassano del Grappa: Housing & Cost of Living

Propriété en Bassano sits at a median of around €2,080/m², which makes it one of the pricier mid-sized towns in the broader Veneto area. That’s not a surprise given the demand and the quality of life, but it’s worth knowing upfront.

A 100m² apartment in the town will cost you somewhere between €133,000 and €257,000 depending on where exactly you are. Here’s how that compares with nearby towns:

Ville Prix de vente (€/m²) Maison moyenne de 100m² (€) Loyer (€/m²) Loyer moyen pour 100m² (€/mois)

Several residents specifically suggest looking outside the town itself if budget matters. In the surrounding villages and smaller towns, rents and purchase prices drop noticeably – and you’re still within easy reach of everything Bassano offers. Marostica, just a few minutes away and with its own medieval piazza, is a popular choice. Rosà et Cittadella are the budget-friendlier options without sacrificing too much access:

“The area is beautiful and quiet, and the hospital is genuinely excellent. That said, the property prices are quite high. The historic centre is a gem, but it’s tiny, and on weekends in season it turns into absolute chaos.”

Asiago is worth a separate mention. It’s a plateau town at 1,000 metres altitude, about 23 minutes up into the mountains – a totally different feel. It has its own services and a real community, so if cooler summers and skiing on your doorstep sound good, it’s worth looking at.

Challenges of Living in Bassano del Grappa

First, this is a very Italian town. If you’re looking for an expat bubble, this isn’t it. Traditions here are still strong – starting with the dialecte local, which you’ll hear everywhere. Most people won’t speak much English in their daily lives, so if you’re moving here, Apprendre l'italien is part of the deal. The same goes for the food scene: don’t expect a wide choice of international restaurants. The local cuisine is genuinely excellent, but if you’re after variety – Thai, Japanese, Lebanese, whatever – the options are limited.

Second, getting around sans voiture is genuinely limiting. As we mentioned earlier, Bassano is very well connected in terms of airports and trains. But that’s long-distance connectivity. Within the area, public transport isn’t frequent enough to rely on for everyday life – especially if you’re living in one of the surrounding villages, which many residents recommend. If you’re planning to live here without a car, you’ll feel the constraints quickly.

Troisièmement, opportunités d'emploi for international professionals are limited. The local economy is active – manufacturing, logistics, SMEs – but options specifically suited to expats or international profiles are few. That said, if you’re a teacher or work in education, it’s worth knowing that there’s a fairly large international school in Rosà (H-Farm), just a few kilometres from Bassano, and another one in Trévise, about 50 minutes away.

Réflexions finales

Bassano del Grappa is one of those places where the score on paper actually reflects what you feel when you’re there. It’s a well-run, well-connected northern Italian town with a lot going for it.

Pour retraités, it’s hard to beat: top-decile healthcare, a historic centre that stays alive year-round, and the mountains ten minutes away. For familles, the schools, the safety, and the general feel of the place make it a very solid choice. For télétravailleurs, the internet speeds and the day-to-day quality of life speak for themselves.

Property prices are higher than the regional average, the summer heat is a thing, and the centre gets overwhelmed on busy weekends. But for the right person, this might be a really good choice.
