Analysing detailed demographic data for every Italian municipality (don’t worry, no PhD needed to read this) allowed us to answer a simple but important question: which towns are most likely to withstand Italy’s demographic decline? This matters for anyone considering a move or retirement. Today’s idyllic village can, within a decade, become a place without a pharmacy, a doctor or even a supermarket. As it often happens in Italy, the result is more nuanced than the usual narratives. The familiar stereotypes (South = decline, or the “magic” of regions where towns are quietly emptying out) do not hold up under scrutiny. The demographic future changes from one town to the next, often just a few kilometres apart.
