Sip & Savour: My 5 Favourite Bars in the Veneto

From hidden wine bars to cafés steeped in history, here are my five favourite bars in the Veneto region.

From hidden wine bars to cafés steeped in history, in Veneto, there’s a place for every kind of budget and night out. Whether you’re here for the cocktails, the local wines, or just to soak in the atmosphere, you’re in for a treat.

When I first went out in Italy, I noticed something curious – after saying “Cin cin” to toast, Italians would always tap their glass on the table before drinking. Intrigued, I asked an Italian friend about it. She explained it’s a way to ground the toast, show respect, and savour the moment. It’s a simple tradition that adds a touch of charm to the ritual. So, next time you’re raising a glass, don’t forget the tap—it’s the Venetian way!

That being said, here are my 5 favourite bars in the Veneto I suggest checking out when you visit the region.

Harry’s Bar – Venice

Wolfgang Moroder lusenberg.com

Harry’s Bar first opened its doors in 1931 and has been serving happy customers ever since. It’s famed as the birthplace of the Bellini cocktail (a favourite of mine), a blend of Prosecco and white peach purée. This bar was a regular spot for Ernest Hemingway, who mentioned it in his novel Across the River and Into the Trees.

Though it’s welcomed icons like Charlie Chaplin and Peggy Guggenheim, Harry’s Bar remains a spot for anyone to enjoy. Recognised for its cultural significance, the bar was declared a national landmark by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Affairs in 2001.

Beyond its cocktails, Harry’s Bar is credited with creating the beef carpaccio, named after the Venetian painter Vittore Carpaccio. Located near Piazza San Marco, visitors continue to praise its enduring charm, making it a must-visit destination for those who appreciate history, iconic drinks, and impeccable service.

Caffè Pedrocchi – Padua

Caffè Pedrocchi has been a Padua institution since 1831, earning the nickname “café without doors” for its 24/7 operation until 1916. Its rich history includes playing a pivotal role in the 1848 student uprisings, and a local superstition warns University of Padua students to avoid entering before graduation or risk never finishing their studies.

There are several different rooms, starting with the Green Room, which allows visitors to stop and rest without making a purchase, making it a popular spot for a quick break. The Red Room, the café’s central space, is home to the historic bar and known for being a little pricey but well worth it for the atmosphere and grandeur.

In the White Room, you can enjoy lunch or dinner while taking in a piece of history – this is where, on 8 February 1848, Austro-Hungarian soldiers fired a bullet into the wall during a student revolt. The bullet hole remains visible today, adding a connection to the café’s revolutionary past.

Don’t leave without trying the signature “Caffè Pedrocchi,” a mint-infused espresso topped with cream, served with a biscuit and a small glass of water. Whether you visit for its history, charm, or legendary coffee, Caffè Pedrocchi offers an experience that’s both unique and unforgettable.

Enoteca Segreta – Verona

Enoteca Segreta, nestled in a charming alley near Juliet’s House, is a hidden gem in Verona’s historic centre. This cosy wine bar offers a curated selection of local wines and traditional Venetian cicchetti, making it an ideal spot for a quiet evening after exploring the Verona Arena.

Guests appreciate its intimate atmosphere and knowledgeable staff, with one reviewer describing it as “a hidden restaurant with amazing food.” A well-kept secret is the “secret table,” located in a small cellar with a Roman vaulted ceiling. This space seats up to 12 people, perfect for a private dining experience.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable meal in Verona, Enoteca Segreta won’t disappoint you.

Bar Borsa – Vicenza

Bar Borsa, tucked beneath the Basilica Palladiana, is a must-visit for drinks in Vicenza. By day, it’s a cosy spot for coffee and pastries, but as the sun sets, it turns into the go-to place for cocktails and live jazz. Locals often recommend starting with an Aperol Spritz – it’s as classic as the setting itself.

The bar’s outdoor seating gives you front-row seats to Piazza dei Signori, making it perfect for soaking up the lively atmosphere. Whether you’re here to kick back with friends or enjoy a bit of music, Bar Borsa has you covered.

Osteria al Ponte Dante – Treviso

Okay, I’m cheating…this is technically an osteria, not a bar. But with the great wine they serve and the chance to grab some fantastic food, you won’t mind. Set by the peaceful Sile River, it’s the kind of place where you can sip on a glass of Prosecco, soak in the view, and forget about the world for a while.

If you’re lucky, you might catch locals playing briscola, a classic Italian card game that gets competitive fast. Whether you’re stopping by for a drink or staying for the food, Osteria al Ponte Dante is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the real Treviso.

The Veneto’s Bars: Cin cin

Whether you’re sipping a Bellini at Harry’s Bar, enjoying a minty espresso at Caffè Pedrocchi, or watching the world go by at Bar Borsa, the Veneto has a drink (and a vibe) for everyone. These spots aren’t just about the cocktails or the wine, they’re about the memories you make, the people you meet, and the stories (and hopefully not the hangover) you’ll take home.

So, grab a glass, find your seat, and toast to the good life in the Veneto. Salute!
