9 Enchanting Walled Cities In Veneto To Explore

Top 9 walled cities in Veneto you must pay a visit to.

When you think of Veneto, Venice, fine Italian cuisine, and stunning scenery, a often come to mind. Yet, some of the region’s most fascinating attractions are its walled cities—fortified towns that tell the story of their rich past.

These cities, once vital for guarding trade routes and borders, now stand as living museums of medieval life. With their small cobbled streets and towering walls, they offer a glimpse into a time when defence shaped daily life.

After exploring the region, I’ve picked the walled cities in Veneto that you shouldn’t miss. Each has its own character, combining history, culture, not to mention good food to make your trip unforgettable.

Soave

  • Location: Verona

Though modest in size, Soave is a beautiful town with some must-visit spots if you’re planning on a week-long trip. Primarily known for its exceptional white wine, it is home to several destinations that showcase a beautiful medieval setting where you can (and should) roam for hours.

Once inside, the main sites to visit are the vineyards and the Scaligero Castle.

The Castle is a typical military artefact of the Medieval age, with a breathtaking exterior dominated by nearby greenery that complements the high walls. Inside, the armoury and caves give a sense of the town’s past history and culture.

In addition to these two, I’d suggest you also visit the Pieropan, Suavia, and Inama wineries to get an authentic taste of Soave’s heritage. For food lovers, the Ristorante Al Gambero and Osteria La Scala offer exceptional menus mainly centred around meat and other traditional options.

Cittadella

  • Location: Padua

Among the popular walled cities in the Veneto region, Cittadella stands out on the larger end, with a population of roughly 20,000 people. The wall itself is so massive that you can see it from any rooftop in the city. Known for its impressive medieval walls, it offers you a chance to walk along the fully restored ramparts, from where you get to enjoy the surrounding views.

This circular fortification is unique in its design, with gates in all four cardinal directions.

For dining, popular spots like Ristorante Due Mori and Trattoria alla Cima serve a variety of dishes, from wood-fired pizza to fresh seafood

As for shopping, there are no significant malls in Cittadella, but you can try your luck at Padova’s Centro Commerciale, which is a 30-minute drive from the town.

Montagnana

  • Location: Padova

Similar to Soave, Montagnana is one of the smallest walled cities in Veneto, but it has a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes it stand out. It’s one of the easier-to-reach areas in Padova, with several accessible transportation modes—plane, car, bus, train, and even bicycle.

The town is surrounded by stunning medieval walls that give it a timeless feel. Inside, you’ll find quiet streets, family-run shops, and inviting cafés where you can relax and soak in the local atmosphere.

Montagnana is also well-known for its prosciutto crudo, which is celebrated every year during a lively festival that brings the community together.

Noale

  • Location: Venice

If you plan on staying in Venice for a while, visiting the beautiful town of Noale should be on your agenda.

For a laid-back day, you can head to Aquaestate, a water park that’s great for families or anyone wanting to relax and have a good time. It’s a favourite spot for both locals and visitors, especially during the warmer months.

If history is more your thing, don’t miss the Rocca dei Tempesta. This medieval fortress and its surrounding walls give the town a unique charm. Walking around the old structures, you get a real sense of the stories this place holds.

Villafranca

  • Location: Verona

Regarded as the city of love, Verona is one of the largest cities in Veneto. The local cuisine, such as that found in Osteria Le Vecete, is truly second to none. There are a ton of sites to visit here, but if you’re looking for walled towns, Villafranca can be your next stop.

One of the main areas to visit here is definitely the Porta Bosari and Porta Leoni, which are ancient Roman gates that connect the wall to the heart of Verona. Both structures are incredibly well-preserved, and their architectural design with white marble and limestone is something to behold.

Other than that, I highly recommend the Castelvecchio Museum, which is a 30-minute drive from Villafranca. It houses some of the most beautiful Renaissance art, like “The Madonna with Child and Saints.”

Castelfranco

  • Location: Venice

Located on a hilltop roughly 30 km away from Venice, you’ll find Castelfranco, arguably one of the biggest walled cities in Veneto. Unlike tourist-heavy spots, Castelfranco has a more local feel, making it an ideal place to slow down and enjoy its timeless atmosphere.

The Duomo and the Giorgione museums are must-visits. They showcase some of the town’s most treasured architecture and art.

Marostica

  • Location: Vicenza

Most walled cities highlight their history with grand fortresses and ancient walls, but, Marostica does it in an unorthodox way.

At the heart of the town, there’s a giant chess board, and every two years, you’ll have a wonderful show with actual living characters playing each piece. It’s an event that draws visitors from all over the world.

Beyond the chess spectacle, Marostica offers plenty of outdoor activities, from trekking and hiking to enjoying the lively Summer Festival, complete with concerts and international cuisine.

Este

  • Location: Padua

Located at the bottom of Euganean Hills in Padua, Este is one of the most modern-looking walled towns in Veneto. As you’d guess, there’s a lot of elevation and hilly areas here, which add a strong sense of scale, though it may be slightly trickier to get through.

Most people visit Este as part of their trip to Euganuean Hills, but the town itself has some main attractions worth visiting, like the Castello Carrarese and the Piazza Maggiore.

The Castello Carrarese, a medieval fortress with well-preserved walls, is a standout. Its structure wraps around the town, giving a glimpse into Este’s medieval past.

Another spot worth exploring is Piazza Maggiore, the main square, where you can enjoy the lively atmosphere and admire the historic architecture. For history lovers, the Museo Nazionale Atestino features an excellent collection of artefacts that tell the story of the area’s ancient inhabitants.

Peschiera del Garda

  • Location: Verona

Lake Garda has among the most gorgeous scenic views in all of Italy. Thus, the Peschiera del Garda’s beauty must definitely be seen in person. If you’re a fan of boats, the public boat tours here are available all year round with competitive pricing and a fun experience to offer.

Other tourist attractions include visiting Bracco Baldo Beach and trying traditional Italian food in restaurants like the Osteria Al Loco and La Riva.

Conclusion

If you’re planning a trip to Veneto, visiting these towns is well worth your time. Each one has its own way of making you feel like you’ve stepped into a different world, even if just for a little while.
