Veneto is often known for its beautiful cities, but what really makes this region special are its mountain towns. Located in the Venetian Alps, these spots offer stunning views, outdoor adventures, and a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. In this post, I’ll take you through seven of the best scenic mountain towns you should visit at least once in your life.

Key Takeaways

  • Venetian Mountains are surrounded by peaks, lush valleys, and pristine natural landscapes, making them perfect for nature lovers.
  • Like Mount Pasubio and Asiago, these towns and trails hold rich histories from WWI, with preserved sites and traditions that showcase their cultural heritage.
  • You can enjoy hiking trails at Strada delle 52 Gallerie or paragliding over Monte Baldo. Towns like Bassano del Grappa and Alleghe provide cosy accommodations, delicious local cuisine, and peaceful views.

7 Best Scenic Mountain Towns In Veneto

Discover the best Mountain Towns in Veneto, where you can create unforgettable memories and enjoy breathtaking landscapes.

  • Monte Baldo
  • Asiago
  • Mount Pasubio
  • Cima Carega
  • Monte Grappa
  • Dolomiti Bellunesi
  • Monte Civetta

Monte Baldo

Very first on my list is Monte Baldo, one of the famous peaks of the Venetian Alps, stretching from Verona to Trentino. The mountain is located very near Lake Garda, and if you visit the area in the autumn, you’ll have the chance to experience the renowned boat race in Venetian history called the Palio delle Contrade in Garda.

The town nearest Monte Baldo is Malcesine, which is very small but has a lovely architecture made out of stone streets and is home to a medieval castle called Scaligero Castle.

If you visit Monte Baldo during summer, you can enjoy everything from mountain walks and paragliding to mountain biking. Mountain biking was definitely the highlight of my visit!

The Monte Baldo Cable Car ride is an absolute must-do that you won’t want to miss. This cable car will take you around 1800 meters above sea level of Mount Baldo, and it offers rotatable cabins from which you can enjoy 360-degree views around the mountain covered with lush greenery and rich biodiversity.

Asiago

Asiago is the smallest mountain town in Altopiano, rising from the ashes and ruins of WWI. Once known as the most beautiful town in Veneto, its charm was only enhanced by its reconstruction.

Gabriele D’Annunzio has famously described Asiago as “sitting in the middle of a green valley, surrounded by bright, untouched nature.”

Famous for its traditional cheese-making, Asiago is home to some of the finest cow cheese in the world, made using techniques passed down through generations.

Moreover, you can also visit this town for sightseeing, as two of the most famous sights are right on the Piazza Carli: the Town Hall and the Cathedral built in 1922 after WWI.

The warmth and hospitality of the locals make this town especially welcoming.

Mount Pasubio

Mount Pasubio is another beautiful scenic town in Veneto. It is the best peak in the Veneto region and a symbol of nature, history, and adventure for tourists and expats.

Its surrounding towns, like Valli del Pasubio, have a medieval atmosphere that transports you back in time. But if you want to do more than just exploring, trying out the local cuisine at the local trattorias around always sounds like a fun activity.

For accommodation, some guesthouses suggestions include:

Mount Psubio offers some of the best hiking trails, like Strada delle 52 Gallerie and Strada degli Eroi and it’s known for 52 historic tunnels built in just 10 months during WWI. Today, Strada delle 52 Gallerie is still remembered as an engineering marvel that provides visitors, locals, and hikers with exceptional views of valleys and peaks.

Another historic trail here is the Strada degli Eroi, also known as the Road of Heroes. This path symbolizes the soldiers and the solemn memorials dedicated to those who travelled it to fight in the area, defending their honour under extreme conditions.

Cima Carega

Cima Carega, standing at 2,295 meters, is the fourth-highest peak in Veneto and is part of the Little Dolomites in the Trento province.

It is a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers, surrounded by scenic valleys and charming mountain towns.

Though there isn’t a town directly near Cima Carega, Rifugio Mario Fraccaroli, a well-known hut just below the summit, serves as a great base for exploring the peak.

For those seeking a challenge, the hiking trails here are some of the most difficult (you can access several routes, such as Giazza, Recoaro Terme, and Rovereto), offering spectacular views of the surrounding areas.

Monte Grappa

Monte Grappa, a 1,700-meter peak in the Venetian Prealps, offers some of the most panoramic views in Veneto.

The peak served as a base for Italian soldiers during WWI in 1917, as they defended against Austrian troops seeking control of the Venetian mountains.

You can visit Bassano del Grappa, which is located right beneath the Monte Grappa, the most famous town in Vicenza and have a walk in the beautiful Ponte Vecchio bridge.

The fascinating history of this old medieval town inspires many, especially due to its connection with both World Wars. (Ernest Hemingway also spent some time in this town during the war.)

Dolomiti Bellunesi

The Dolomiti Bellunesi range is the largest in the Dolomitic Alps and features dramatic rocky paths and diverse landscapes.

Located within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, this area offers 32 square kilometres of stunning scenery, including springs, rivers, and lush forests.

The park is a haven for trekkers, so if you love this sport, don’t miss out on Dolomiti Bellunesi if you’re in the region!

Monte Civetta

The final peak on my list, Monte Civetta, rises to 3,937 feet and is famous for its steep cliffs and striking views. Known as “The Wall of Walls,” it attracts climbers, hikers, nature lovers, and skiing enthusiasts to conquer its summit.

At the base of Monte Civetta lies the charming town of Alleghe, and thanks to this picturesque town, Monte Civetta has been designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site

My Thoughts

Exploring these 7 scenic mountain towns in Veneto has been a truly memorable experience. Each town has its own special vibe, with breathtaking views, lovely Italian-style streets, and welcoming locals who’ll make you feel at home.
