It’s a place that, every summer, attracts thousands of tourists and expats – many of whom eventually decide to settle here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what\u2019s it actually like living in Francavilla al Mare all year round? To answer that, we combined our own data with reviews and opinions from residents, to give you a general overview of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life in Francavilla al Mare: What People Say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing that comes up consistently is the posizione<\/strong>. Francavilla<\/a><\/strong> sits right on the Adriatic coast, with the mountains of Abruzzo about an hour away. The coastline is a big part of life here. The beach is rated excellent for water quality, and from the town centre you can reach it in about four minutes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The position is great \u2013 it’s in the heart of Abruzzo, by the sea on the Adriatic coast. People are really welcoming. I fell in love with the region and the whole Italian way of life. But it does get very, very crowded in summer.”<\/em>\u201c<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Pescara<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 a proper mid-sized Italian city with a full commercial centre, hospitals, a university, and a more active cultural scene \u2013 is essentially next door. The two towns share a border, and locals often treat the whole area as one. So Francavilla gives you the feel of a smaller coastal town<\/a><\/strong> while keeping most of the practical amenities of a city within easy reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, as we’ll see later, there’s a fairly significant seasonal split<\/strong>. Summers are something else entirely \u2013 in a good way or a challenging way, depending on your personality. The lungomare fills up, beach clubs are packed, and events and concerts run through the warmer months. For the right person, that’s a huge draw. For someone looking for year-round quiet, though, it’s worth knowing that the off-season feels quite different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transport and Connectivity in Francavilla al Mare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the main pros of living in Francavilla al Mare<\/a><\/strong> is the fact that you’re just 15 minutes away from an airport<\/strong>, in a town that\u2019s molto percorribile a piedi<\/strong> and where you don\u2019t necessarily need a car for daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aeroporto d'Abruzzo<\/strong> in Pescara is definitely convenient. It\u2019s not Fiumicino<\/a>, but it connects to several European destinations like London, Bucharest, Malta, etc. So for European travel, it works well. For intercontinental routes, you\u2019ll need to get to Roma<\/strong> (Ciampino<\/a><\/strong> is around 90 minutes away, while Fiumicino<\/strong> is a bit further) or head north to Ancona\u2019s Raffaello Sanzio Airport<\/strong>, about 75 minutes up the coast, which gives you a few more options, though still mostly within Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il train situation<\/strong> is also reasonably good. Francavilla has its own station, five minutes from the centre, with regular services to Pescara<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> (about 10 minutes), Vasto<\/a><\/strong> (45 minutes), and Bari<\/a><\/strong> (3 hours and 30 minutes). From Pescara Centrale station, you also get access to the full Adriatic line, plus connections to Roma<\/a><\/strong> (3 hours and 30 minutes) and other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For daily life, you don\u2019t necessarily bisogno di un'auto<\/a><\/strong>. But a lot depends on your interests and where you decide to live. If you don\u2019t live right in the centre and want to explore the surrounding towns, then you\u2019ll probably want one. Property here is noticeably cheaper than Pescara<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, which is part of what gets people interested in the first place. The median sale price sits around \u20ac1,941\/m\u00b2<\/strong> – that’s higher than in many similar towns in Italy, but that\u2019s partly the price you pay for being on the Trabocchi Coast<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really nice town, especially the areas along the seafront, although living here isn\u2019t exactly cheap.<\/strong> There are some beautiful old villas, newer high-end apartments, and a historic centre up on the hill that\u2019s definitely worth seeing. If you want to be directly on the lungomare<\/strong>, expect prices to skew toward the upper end of that range, and availability is low. But move a few streets back, or look toward the Paese<\/a> Alto<\/strong>, and the picture changes. This is actually one of Francavilla’s more interesting angles. While most outsiders focus on the coastal strip<\/strong>, the historic upper town has its own character \u2013 older buildings, quieter streets, hillside views: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The countryside option around Francavilla is also worth exploring if you want more space. Inland prices drop considerably, and you’re still within easy reach of the coast and Pescara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges of Living in Francavilla al Mare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Primo, assistenza sanitaria<\/a> is probably the main drawback. <\/strong>The nearest hospital, Spirito Santo, is about 10 minutes away, but the local healthcare district doesn\u2019t perform particularly well across several quality indicators. Pescara\u2019s hospital infrastructure<\/strong> is significantly stronger, but anyone with complex, ongoing, or specialist medical needs<\/a><\/strong> should still think carefully about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, the summer crowds are real, <\/strong>and they completely change the town. July and August in Francavilla get genuinely intense. If you’re planning to stay during peak season and you don\u2019t enjoy that kind of atmosphere, you\u2019ll either need to embrace it or look at quieter nearby towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very family-friendly town.<\/strong> It\u2019s a bit cheaper than Pescara and basically right across the bridge. But in July and August, Francavilla gets absolutely packed<\/strong>. If you enjoy that kind of atmosphere, then it\u2019s great. Otherwise, you\u2019re probably better off looking at smaller nearby towns with fewer tourists.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Third, local job opportunities are limited.<\/a> <\/strong>That\u2019s true for most towns of this size in central and southern Italy, and Francavilla is no exception. If you’re relocating to retire, it\u2019s not really an issue. Also, English isn\u2019t widely spoken outside tourist settings.
