Hvordan er kørekortseksamen struktureret i Italien?

Planning to move to Italy? Here’s what you need to know about the Italian driver’s license exam and how it’s structured.

If you’re among those who want to move to Italy to embrace a slower lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, and surrounded by nature, whether by the sea or in the hills, you might need a car. But before that, you’ll need a driver’s license. Here’s everything you need to know about how the driver’s license exam is structured in Italy and what to expect.

Who Needs to Take the Italian Driving Exam?

Chances are, if you’re reading this article, you’re already aware that not all countries allow you to convert your license to an Italian one.

The great advantage for most European expats is that they can easily swap their existing driver’s license for an Italian one upon relocating to Italy. Usually, they can continue driving until their original license expires, and after that period, they’ll just need to convert it at the local Civil Motorization office and pay a small fee. Otherwise, if the license has no expiration date or exceeds EU validity standards, conversion must occur within two years of establishing residency.

For residents of non-EU countries, the ability to convert a foreign driver’s license to an Italian one depends on existing reciprocity agreements between Italy and the issuing country. Countries such as Albania, Serbia, and Japan have such agreements, allowing drivers to convert their licenses without retaking the driving exams. However, the specific conditions and validity periods of these agreements can vary and are subject to change (be sure to check out the official Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility website).

In cases where no reciprocity agreement exists (e.g., with the United States, Canada, and Australia), individuals can drive with their foreign license for up to one year after establishing residency in Italy. After this period, they must pass both the theoretical and practical Italian driving exams to obtain a local license. Since the theoretical exam is conducted in Italiensk, non-Italian speakers may need extra preparation.

The Structure of the Driver’s License Exam i Italien

The Theory Part

The driver’s license exam in Italy consists of two main sections: theory and practical.

The theory exam is a computerized multiple-choice test with 30 true-or-false questions to be completed in 20 minutter. To pass, you need at least 27 correct answers (with a maximum of three mistakes allowed). The test covers road rules, traffic signs, right-of-way regulations, speed limits, and basic vehicle mechanics. You can navigate freely between questions, change your answers, and review them before submitting.

Most people prepare using online platforms like Quiz Patente Online, Patentati.it, which offer practice tests identical to the real exam. I’d recommend taking the test only when you’re consistently making no more than 3-4 mistakes.

However, if you fail, you have two attempts within six months. If you don’t pass within this period, you’ll need to reapply and start the process from scratch.

Foglio Rosa – What is it?

If you pass the theory exam, you’ll receive a rosa ark, a learner’s permit valid for 12 months that allows you to practice driving before taking the practical test. However, you must:

  • Be accompanied by a licensed driver who has had their license for at least 10 år and is under 65 years old. Passengers are allowed, but only if the required accompanying driver is present.
  • Follow speed restrictions: 90 km/h on major roads and 100 km/h on highways.
  • Avoid driving on highways, major extra-urban roads, or at night (from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise).

Den Practical Part

The practical test is conducted by an examiner from the Ministry of Transport and lasts 25-30 minutes. It evaluates your vehicle control, knowledge of traffic laws, and essential maneuvers like parking, merging, and navigating roundabouts.

If you fail, you have two more attempts within six months, with at least 30 days between each try. If you don’t pass within this period, you’ll need to reapply and start the process again.

The test is always in Italiensk, though you might be lucky enough to find an examiner who speaks some English – but don’t count on it!

Den sproglige barriere

The theory exam is currently available in Italian, German, and French, but unfortunately, not in Engelsk, which can be a significant challenge for expats who don’t speak Italian.

The good news is that some specialized schools help foreigners prepare by teaching key terminology and offering explanations in simplified Italian or English, making the material easier to understand (if you want to learn more about it, click here Drevet til at hjælpe: Hvordan en skole forbereder expats til Italiens kørekort).

Given this, when it comes time to apply for your driver’s license, you’ll need to choose between studying independently (privatista – which is a bit cheaper) or enrolling in a driving school (autoscuola). If your Italian is at an A2-niveau or lower, relying on these online schools to prepare for the theory test as a might be the best option.

Road Rules: Italy vs. America

We understand how challenging it can be to take an exam in a foreign language. However, it’s important to recognize that Italy’s traffic laws have unique characteristics compared to other countries, like the United States.

One of the biggest differences is right-of-way rules at intersections without traffic lights. In Italy, major roads take priority over secondary roads, and when no signs are present, the priority-to-the-right rule applies. In contrast, the U.S. follows a different system: at four-way intersections, the first vehicle to arrive has the right of way, regardless of its direction.

Another major difference is overtaking. In Italy, passing is only allowed on the left, whereas in the U.S., it’s also permitted on the right, as long as the road has at least two lanes in each direction.

Finally, something that often surprises European drivers er den right turn on red. In the U.S., unless a “No Turn on Red” sign is posted, drivers can stop at the intersection, yield to vehicles and pedestrians, and then proceed with the turn. In Italy, however, this is strictly forbidden.

With the help of online resources and a bit of dedication, you’ll be ready to take on the exam and embrace life in Italy with your new driver’s license.
