Palio dei Dieci Comuni In Montagnana

Palio dei Dieci Comuni in Montagnana is a horse race festival known as Palio in Italian. This Medival Festival dates back to the 13th century when Da Carrara defeated Veronese’s troops on August 3rd, 1337. In Italian, “Dieci” translates to the number “10,” symbolizing the ten communities that defeated Veronese and surrounded Montagnana.

Bareback Horse Race

Every year, this bareback horse race is celebrated around the walls of Montagnana, where riders from all 10 communities participate. This horse race is super exciting and gets adrenaline pumping, with riders charging at each other, all trying to catch the top spot.

It proudly features a vibrant parade where participants wear decorated medical outfits, showcasing their historic fashion. Therefore, if you love history, this festival is a top pick and a must-visit for you, as it provides insight into Italy’s iconic past and culture.

You can also visit painting exhibitions featuring a Medieval theme during the event.

Event Period: 24th August till 1st September

Location: Outside the Walls of Montagnana

Sagra di San Marco in Bardolino

Medieval Festivals in Veneto are known for their history and traditions, and Bardolino, located in Veneto, hosts one of Italy’s most famous feasts on April 25th. Venetians honour their Saint Mark (External Link), the patron saint of Venice, and name Sagra di San Marco after him. April 25th is a day of pride and honour, marking the end of WWII and fascism in the country.

Fiera dell’Oggetto Ritrovato In Feltre

One of the notable Medieval Festivals in Veneto is the Fiera dell’Oggetto Ritrovato, also known as Feltre‘s Antique Market. This event is held to promote old and used objects, to give them a second life instead of throwing them away. It also promotes the environmental importance of respecting the three R’s: Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce.

The event occurs every second Sunday of the month from April to December, and it is happening right now in Veneto, so I suggest participating if your visit happens to be in December. It takes place not once but thrice, each adding extra happiness to the Christmas celebrations.

Piazza Maggiore is where shopkeepers set up stalls, surrounded by the Medieval walls of Albino Castle. This market presents a unique historic charm, featuring various items, from antiques to vintage clothes, whether from the local area or worldwide.

Event Period: Starts in April and ends in December.

Dates In 2024: April 14th, May 12th, June 9th, July 14th, August 11th, September 8th, October 13th, November 10th, December 8, 15, 22.

Palio delle Contrade in Garda

The Palio delle Contrade in Garda is one of the 5 best Medieval Festivals in Veneto. The local Fishing community of Garda celebrates this festival every year on August 15th. This event dates back over 50 years and was first celebrated in 1968 in honour of the Feast Day of Mary’s Assumption.

More importantly, “Contrade” represents the Districts and Neighbours of Garda. So, Nine Contrade participates in the Venetian Style Gondola or a Boat Race. However, the 400-meter race starts along the lake from the Port Hall to the Town Hall and then back to the Port, completing this loop three times.

Boat Race in Garda

The race occurs in traditional fishermen’s boats in Lake Garda, with each team member rowing to secure a victory for their Contrade. Each Team consists of four rowers dressed in costumes that display the colours of their district’s flag.

Finally, the race ends with fireworks along the lake’s bank, and the winning Team celebrates their win by enjoying those fireworks. Besides the rowing race, the day accommodates visitors with Ludobus games, Flag wavers, and the Parade of the Palio crew.

Overall, it was a fun day for me to celebrate in Garda because it is a unique experience for visitors and outsiders. They experience the local heritage and the closeness and spirit among all neighbours, which shows healthy competition between the competitors.

Regata Storica in Venice

The Regata Storica is an annual event held in the first week of September. In 2023, it occurred on September 3rd, and in 2024, it was celebrated on September 1st. The term “Regata” dates back to the 13th century and originally referred to Fun and an opportunity for rowers to practice.

Jacopo de’ barbari’s Painting

In the 1500s, a miniaturist, Jacopo de’ Barbari, introduced the term in his painting, The View of Venice, depicting a boat competition with the word “Regata” written on the side.

The concept of Regata evolved significantly and eventually became part of “Voga alla Veneta,” an annual rowing event. During the reign of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, it was organized to celebrate Venice’s glorious past. Due to its immense popularity, the event was officially named Regata Storica in 1899.

During the event, authorities hold a parade alongside Venice’s waterway in Canal Grande and the Bacino San Marco. The rowers decorate their boats and wear historic, colourful costumes. All these rowboats are led by an admiral ship named Bucintoro in remembrance of Queen Caterina Cornaro, who gave her throne to Venice in 1489.

My Thoughts

Exploring these 5 Medieval Festivals in Veneto was an unforgettable experience that left a deep and lasting impression on me. I somehow found myself connected with Italy’s history, culture, and heritage in a way that was really unique and interesting at the same time. That being said, if you’re on the same page and love this type of event, I highly recommend visiting at least some of these places mentioned in this blog for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
